Self-expression is a human instinct

From the moment of birth, human beings live by expressing themselves. A newborn’s cry is both a signal for survival and the very first act of self-expression sent out into the world. Even before learning to speak or write, humans communicate their condition and desires through facial expressions, gestures, crying, and laughter. In this sense, self-expression is not a skill acquired later in life but an instinctive impulse that naturally springs from the deepest core of human existence.

At the root of self-expression lies the desire to affirm one’s own existence. Human beings are not satisfied with merely being alive. We ask ourselves, “Who am I?” and “How have I lived?” and we wish to leave the answers behind as traces of our presence. The anxiety that things will disappear if they are not spoken, or be forgotten if they are not written down, is an expression of this desire. That is why people keep diaries, write letters, and pass on stories. Self-expression is an act of proving one’s existence in this world.

Self-expression is also the manifestation of an instinct to connect with others. As social beings, humans cannot be complete in isolation. Without revealing our thoughts and emotions, understanding and empathy cannot even begin. The moment we convey our feelings to someone, a relationship is formed. Self-expression is both a request—“Please understand me”—and an invitation—“I want to understand you.” Silence breeds isolation, but expression nurtures relationships.

From an emotional perspective as well, self-expression is essential. Unexpressed emotions accumulate in the heart and become a burden. Joy is multiplied when shared, and sorrow grows lighter when spoken aloud. Writing, art, and conversation serve as channels through which emotions flow outward, allowing human beings to restore inner balance. Self-expression is not a luxury; it is a means of survival that sustains mental well-being.

Of course, the forms of self-expression vary depending on culture and historical context. Some societies value silence and restraint, while others encourage active verbal expression. Yet while the forms may differ, the desire to express oneself never disappears. If one cannot speak, one writes; if one cannot make things public, one still reveals oneself through inner monologue. Instincts may be suppressed, but they cannot be eliminated.

Ultimately, self-expression is an inevitable act for living as a human being. Through expression, we come to understand ourselves, connect with others, and give meaning to our lives. Human beings are creatures who live by speaking, writing, and leaving traces behind. Where self-expression ceases, life stagnates; the moment expression begins, life starts to flow again. That is why self-expression is not a choice, but a human instinct.
